My sons believe in reincarnation at the moment (religions fluctuate when you're young). I know Jet probably isn't a reincarnation of your grandfather's dog, but it made me think about those conversations, and what a privilege it is to look after animals and children. Your grandfather knew it, I wish your parents did.
And I'm in awe of how strong you've shown you are. To come out of all that with optimism and grace, and to keep putting it out into the world even on days you probably feel awful. I read "unrepeatable" and thought also, "unbearable". And yet it WAS borne. At a cost. So glad your grandfather had his old buddies to help each other carry the burden of those memories.
Grateful the second Jet came to you. I've had a few rescues now, dogs and cats, and helping them heal and become the loving companions they've always wanted to be is incredibly rewarding.
I sometimes don't think we deserve our pets. But I am so grateful for them.
